ISSUE S001: My first issue.

A nation should require all its students to study the same national curriculum until they enter college rather than allow schools in different parts of the nation to determine which academic course to offer.

531 words

Generally speaking, children in one country have their own rights to get educated before they enter college. It seems to be an issue to design the curriculum in middle schools for students. Should it be a national curriculum or alternative choices provided to educators in schools? Nearly everyone who is growing in middle schools before entering college may hold concrete or non-concrete dreams about his or her future. Different individuals have different characteristics, which follow an old saying in China, “measures taken must respond to local conditions”. It may sound reasonable for the nation to ensure one’s personal development due to his or her specific interest, if it’s possible for the country to carry out such plans in designing curriculum for middle school students.

Simply put, without considering any alternative courses and the students in all the schools having to study the same national curriculum, problems might arise. Schools of different areas may not have the same hardware conditions. We can not assume that all the areas in one country are equally developed. Even in the developed country, that’s not the case. Unbalanced economics lead to distinguishable hardware settings, such laboratories, computers and etc. Students in those schools which have well-equipped laboratories are able to do more chemistry and physics experiments than students from ordinary schools of undeveloped areas. If the curriculum is strictly the same, teachers from ordinary schools must feel obliged to explain the detail situation of experiments, which students haven’t seen tried yet.

Not only do different areas have different hardware conditions, software conditions still differ. According to annual report, most students graduated from universities prefer to developed cities to small towns. The lack of proper teachers might be a bottleneck in carrying out strictly unified curriculum.

Just take the computer course for a further discussion of this issue of national curriculum. If the computer course were one subject of the curriculum, schools must provide the basic computers, such PCs. Though nowadays PCs are relatively cheap, it’s still an unsolvable problem for some schools in undeveloped areas to purchase enough computers for students there. Even such schools had enough equipment, teachers for teaching manipulation and programming techniques may be a rare. How can the computer course be carried out? The students can study the textbooks, remembering a lot of shell commands and principles in programming language, due to the curriculum, no matter how hard the course are. However it’s indeed a waste time to memory such things which should be taught with practice in computer laboratories.

A basic national curriculum will be necessary for those fundamental course such verbal, math, science, history and etc. Students are required to study all of necessary course. Schools should also have their own rights to decide which academic courses to offer for selective course, due to their local conditions, just as we have mentioned, measures taken must respond to local conditions. Without the fundamental curriculum, the quality of middle-school education will be obvious uncontrolled. Without selective curriculum, teaching will get conflicted to local conditions and teachers might stand in an embarrassed situation. A better way is to combine these two parts for students growing up, with basic knowledge and personal interest developed.
